Are you pirating CodeIgniter?

In a recent chat with Lisa and Nevin we were trading funny stories along the lines of “can you believe I was asked $odd_request” and so forth.  This made me remember an interesting story involving the illegal pirating of CodeIgniter.

The request was made through my site contact form from a Hotmail address, so clearly they were at least aware of my site, and might even be regular readers?  It might even be you!

Late last year I got a sheepish email asking for CodeIgniter technical support.  That’s not strange at all, I get many of these a week, and my usual stock response is “hey, CI has an awesome community, why not ask your question on the forums”.

I’ve since deleted the exact response, but it went along the lines of “well I’m embarrassed to admit, and I usually don’t do this sort of thing, but my copy is pirated and I don’t want to get caught”.

...

I never did respond, and now my mind is flowing with all of the things I should have said!

How would you respond to this?!?

This entry was made on and filed into CodeIgniter.

Uhm… I guess I’d ask him what he’d expect to pay for CI, or rather, who’s selling CI?

The email sounds really strange though. Maybe mr Ellis was testing you? Is he much for pranks?

Ok, I admit it. It was me. :)
I got CI from a friend of a friend. Please don’t come after me.

I think not responding at all was probably the best choice.

Yeah, I should try uploading BambooInvoice up to a warez site and see how many new users it attracts as “illegal” software.  I’d like to live on the wild side like that - darn Open Source always ruining my fun!

Rick testing me is an interesting theory.  It was right before I got hired.  Hmm, conspiracy theories abound!

Oh wait, no it was José!  We got you now!

I have been selling CI from my trench coat on the streets of Sacramento, along with some Rolex watches…speaking of which, need a watch? LOL

I would respond with a brutal show of force that was overblown and completely unecessary.  Something along the lines of human sacrifice.  Either that or inform them that CI is actually open source.  That way they can use it without fear and it may actually turn them onto other open source software.

You should have said, “Argh. Live on the edge, matey.”
