Are you reading this page in Internet Explorer 6?  For shame…

I’ve never thought that my site attracted an “average” interweb visitor.  I mean, we talk about boring things like accessibility, frameworks, scripting… the kind of things that makes Joanne roll her eyes if I even think about getting started*.  In short, my readers tend to be web-savvy, standards-aware and generally pretty technically “hip”, so it doesn’t surprise me in the least that most of you would choose to surf in something besides Internet Explorer.

...

Ah… the reason for that empty line is that I’m chocking back the urge to curse out IE (yet again).  This post will not turn into another IE bashing session (no matter how much it deserves it).  Nope, I’m going to stay on point.  My point is that I can proudly say that around 80% of the people on this site aren’t using IE.  Way to buck the trends!
around 20% of DerekAllard.com visitors use IE

On closer inspection, Internet Explorer further breaks down like this:
Internet Explorer 6.0 11%
Internet Explorer 7.0 7%

Which begs the question… who on EARTH would choose to use IE 6.  6!  What the heck!  At least IE 7 has some nice things in there (the zooming is nice… tabs finally…)  Yeah we’re all disappointed by the lack of bug-squashing, but its still worlds better then 6.  I can account for about 1% of my hits in the last few days (since the DerekAllare.com ExpressionEngine rebirth) as me testing the site in IE 6 and 7, but still… that leaves a lot unaccounted for.  So the real question: if you are reading this page in IE 6, I’d love to hear why.  Leave a comment!

* sidenote1: I got myself a copy of Transcending CSS, and now my wife maintains that even my “fun” reading is nerdy ;)
* sidenote2: The conditionally sticky sidebar doesn’t work in IE 6.

To answer your question about ‘who on EARTH would choose to use IE 6’, I’d have to say that there are still people using Windows 98/2000, both of which can’t run IE7. So unless those persons upgrade to XP/Vista, they are pretty much stuck with IE6. But hope is still there as long as they switch to Firefox. :) Are you able to check which OS those IE users are using?

And Transcending CSS is an awesome book. I’m still reading through my copy but I’m loving it so far. Excellent!!!

The only time I use IE is when I do my testing. It’s a curious thing to open IE and see it through their eyes..lol.

Please share this comment with Cliff, but I was looking for some help with flash, and I went to Cliff’s site and yours, and I was sucked in reading all about “geek Stuff” and I was thinking, wow, you guys are both super geeks (in a good way mind) and then it occurred to me…8:30pm, Friday night, last night of freedom before my husband and daughter Lilly return from the UK, and I’m reading about geeky web stuff!
What have your guys done to me? I just thank my lucky stars that a Mr. Jack Daniels is sharing this moment with me, so not a total loss…

If I am at work we are forced to use IE 6. we can’t upgrade, download software, etc. So probably a few percentage points for IE are from me hitting your site from work.

Haha, I have transcending CSS right next to me here. Haven’t had too much time to get through it yet but I get the impression that the fact that your sidebar doesn’t work in IE6 is sitting well with the book’s philosophy and at least you know you’re doing your part to inflict pain back on the IE-loving hellspawn.

Sucks to be John though. Can’t you VNC into your box at home so you can surf using Firefox from there?

I must say I feel sorry for all the windoze users having to upgrade to Vista. It is the biggest heap of crap thus far. The fact that microsoft can get any info off your PC is madness. If I wasn’t a mac user, I’d switch to Linux.

Yeah, strangely, and I say this with total sincerity, I remember a time when IE was just the technically superior browser.  Firefox didn’t exist… heck, I don’t even think Mozilla existed really, Netscape 4 was trying to transition into Netscape 6… and totally dropped the ball.  Apple hadn’t done Safari, and even the KDE rendering engine that Safari is based on was immature, and only available on Linux.

Oh, those were the days… and someone please unplug the whole inter-web if we ever have to go back to it.

Incidently, my interactions at SXSW have basically sealed the deal for me.  I’m probably moving to a Mac, and probably doing it shortly.  I’ve toyed with trying to run Linux again seriously, but honestly, I don’t have the interest in it that I once did.

Hmm… guess I’ll have to blog about that a bit also.

I don’t feel sorry for Microsoft, they did it to themselves. Looks good on them!
