Are you reading this page in Internet Explorer 6? For shame…
I’ve never thought that my site attracted an “average” interweb visitor. I mean, we talk about boring things like accessibility, frameworks, scripting… the kind of things that makes Joanne roll her eyes if I even think about getting started*. In short, my readers tend to be web-savvy, standards-aware and generally pretty technically “hip”, so it doesn’t surprise me in the least that most of you would choose to surf in something besides Internet Explorer.
...
Ah… the reason for that empty line is that I’m chocking back the urge to curse out IE (yet again). This post will not turn into another IE bashing session (no matter how much it deserves it). Nope, I’m going to stay on point. My point is that I can proudly say that around 80% of the people on this site aren’t using IE. Way to buck the trends!

On closer inspection, Internet Explorer further breaks down like this:
Internet Explorer 6.0 11%
Internet Explorer 7.0 7%
Which begs the question… who on EARTH would choose to use IE 6. 6! What the heck! At least IE 7 has some nice things in there (the zooming is nice… tabs finally…) Yeah we’re all disappointed by the lack of bug-squashing, but its still worlds better then 6. I can account for about 1% of my hits in the last few days (since the DerekAllare.com ExpressionEngine rebirth) as me testing the site in IE 6 and 7, but still… that leaves a lot unaccounted for. So the real question: if you are reading this page in IE 6, I’d love to hear why. Leave a comment!
* sidenote1: I got myself a copy of Transcending CSS, and now my wife maintains that even my “fun” reading is nerdy ;)
* sidenote2: The conditionally sticky sidebar doesn’t work in IE 6.

To answer your question about ‘who on EARTH would choose to use IE 6’, I’d have to say that there are still people using Windows 98/2000, both of which can’t run IE7. So unless those persons upgrade to XP/Vista, they are pretty much stuck with IE6. But hope is still there as long as they switch to Firefox. :) Are you able to check which OS those IE users are using?
And Transcending CSS is an awesome book. I’m still reading through my copy but I’m loving it so far. Excellent!!!
