Freakauth : community driven CodeIgniter authentication

August 26th, 2008

FreakAuth

It is often said, but one of the great things about the CodeIgniter project is the community that sprung up around it.  Hardworking, smart, insightful, patient people. A true “open source” community willing to share in their time, expertise and enthusiasm.  Too often these people don’t get the recognition they deserve.  I just wanted to take a moment to mention one that I’ve always admired - FreakAuth.

FreakAuth is mostly driven by danfreak and grahack.  The project is well documented, highly popular, and frankly, very useful.  The kind of project we’re lucky to have.  Show your appreciation by dropping them a “thank you” or as I did, make a small donation to a worthwhile project.

Thanks Dan and Grahack.

I’ll second that.

Freakauth was one of the first lib’s that I installed.  Not only was it a quick win for a CI newbie, it does a great job of leading by example.  The initial setup pages, where you actually run the webapp in order to activate it, are a thing of beauty.

Hey Derek, that’s nice from you!

No donation is worth a post on this blog! That’s a great reward for us who worked a lot (well not so much recently…).

Dan just told me about this post and I think it will boost our motivation. We’ll try to have a look at our tickets on http://www.ciforge.com/trac/freakauth/ and fix some bugs. Dear users, be sure to post yours (and your fixes!).

Funny I was just looking at FreakAuth the other day as a possible authentication solution for our project.

It looks like the most recent version of FreakAuth was released over a year ago for CI 1.5.x—will it work with CI 1.6? Has the project been abandoned?

FreakAuth is not abandoned, just sleeping a bit while Dan and me are busy with personal things.
As I said in my comment (waiting for being moderated (Derek, if you read this…)), this post from Derek kind of motivated us moving forward again!

(please Akismet…)

I guess we have to be polite for our comments to be accepted…

Sorry Grahack!  I’ve approved the comment, and disabled askimet for a bit to try to get instant commenting.  It only catches a few spam comments a week, and I can handle those personally.

Super glad to hear your news, and to see Freakauth back into the limelight ;)

I was personally hoping that CI 2.0 would have an auth module built in, or available as an official mod, developed by the team itself. I think it’s a highly useful mod, one that should have that core support by the team. :)

If I recall, Derek previously said that “If EE needs it, CI will have it.” Hopefully you’ll make good on that promise. I think auth would be something EE needs, so needless to say I’m crossing my fingers over here!

Thoughts? Insight? Juicy details, perhaps? ;)
